LCSW, ScD

Valery Fradkov is the founder and Clinical Director of the Advanced Psychology Institute, and the developer of Message-Centered Psychology, the framework the Institute is built on. He has been practicing psychotherapy for over twenty years, alongside research and teaching in the psychology of emotion and communication.

Before psychology, he spent two decades in physics – at the Institute of Solid State Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was a research professor. He then spent nearly a decade on Wall Street, as a quantitative analyst at Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Bloomberg, and other major financial institutions. He holds a Doctor of Science degree in physics and mathematics and master's degrees in engineering and in clinical social work. He has published more than fifty peer-reviewed papers.

Psychology found Valery by accident (see Our Framework for more details), and gained his scientific way of thinking in return: attention to terminology, abstraction and modeling, and structured testing of hypotheses.

For him, each client carries a complex inner universe and invites him in – and Valery studies it the way he once studied the outer one as a physicist. The study is not impersonal; it is full of empathy and respect: he is a guest in his clients' worlds, there to understand and help, not to judge, criticize, or command.

As a clinician, he works with adults and teenagers on problems rooted in broken interpersonal communication and emotion regulation – a range that runs from anxiety to addiction and from uncontrolled anger to personality disorders. As Clinical Director, he supervises the Institute's clinicians, trains them in Message-Centered Psychology, and teaches continuing-education courses for licensed professionals through the Institute's ASWB-approved program.

He is licensed in New Jersey and New York and sees clients by video, in English and Russian.
